Timber products’ length can be extended with finger joints. Finger jointing can also be used for other purposes, like in joinery applications, where for instance the knots are removed and then the remaining knotless material is finger jointed into continuous, long pieces (often also glued together with several pieces to get the desired size).
Finger jointing usually takes place on automated lines, where the camera detects the knots and other defects, the remaining lengths are optimised, finger jointing takes place automatically, as does the bonding with glue and final pressing, too.
In Finland, the largest volumes of finger jointing are used for glulam and window components.
