The camera-based applications are used widely in sawmill industry. Typically camera-based systems are used in grading of green and dry timber.
Microwave technology or the capacitive measuring of capacity are used when the moisture of pieces is being controlled. The strength grading of sawn timber is based on resonance vibration technology.
Quality grading is done primarly by using the generally accepted Nordic Grading Rules, but programmes allow also various customer specific parameters to be included.
The Nordic grading rules have been unified by sawmill industry associations into a publication “Nordic Timber – Grading Rules”. In the visual strength grading the European standard EN14081-1 (INSTA 142) is used.
