Finnish sawmill industry uses an ecological raw material and Finland has sufficient amounts of it.
The sawmills are often the economic drivers of local communities. In remote areas, sawmills have significant impact on employment. It has been estimated that every job at a sawmill has an indirect impact of five more. In addition, sawmills bring provinces export earnings, which benefits local economies in tax as well as in stumpage income.
The production process of sawmills is energy self-sufficient. Products are mainly used for building. Sawn timber has risen to the fourth most important export article in Finland in the end of 2010’s. There are around 80 industrial sawmills and they all export their products. Nowadays the production volumes are over 10 million cubic meters / year all.
